Is it illegal to bring bak kwa in Singapore? ›

5 Travellers should also note that certain food items do not fall under this exemption. For example, poultry and eggs from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand are prohibited. Meat in all forms including bak kwa, from Malaysia and Thailand are also not allowed.

From 12 September 2022, all NSmen will receive a base NS Pay of $1,600 per month for all ORNS activities except for IPPT, NS FIT, mobilization, non-ICT shooting and medical activities. The base NS Pay will be pro-rated according to the duration of the ORNS activity.

However, dues to strict USDA meat import regulations, importing Bak Kwa, even for personal uses, is illegal. They are subject to confiscation by US customs.

For instance, travellers are barred from taking in bak kwa, or barbecued sweet meat, into Singapore. Bak kwa is considered a pork product and can be imported only from approved regions, including Australia, Japan, United States and a number of European countries.

If you're a male Permanent Resident (PR), you must serve NS if you received PR status as a foreign student or under your parents' sponsorship. You must comply with your NS notices and Further Reporting Orders (FROs). If you fail to do so, you will be committing an offence under the Enlistment Act.

Failure to serve NS

All NS defaulters shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or to both. NS defaulters below age 40 will still have to serve NS, and will be recommended for a lighter sentence as compared to those who have evaded NS entirely.

The import of chewing gum classified under HS code 1704 1000 into Singapore is absolutely prohibited under the Regulation of Imports and Exports(Chewing Gum) Regulations.

MIRI – The Sarawak government's import ban on bak kwa (Chinese dried meat) from the peninsula still stands, said Veterinary Services Department (DVS) Sarawak director Adrian Susin Ambud. When contacted today, he said the ban is necessary to curb the spread of African swine fever (ASF).
