Why do Trader Joe's employees talk to you?
No, the Trader Joe's cashiers are not flirting with you, company leadership says. Turns out they really do just want to know if they can help you reach that pack of Joe's O's on the high shelf.
However, according to Trader Joe's CEO Bryan Palbaum, the rumor is completely false.
In a recent episode on the Inside Trader Joe's podcast, CEO Bryan Palbaum addressed the rumors that employees are trained to flirt with customers and said it's just that – a rumor.
Their efforts are fairly compensated, causing employees to feel fulfilled by their hard work. They receive a 20% discount on all store items, access to health benefits, and satisfactory pay in accordance with the amount of time that they have worked at Trader Joe's.
Bryan Palbaum quickly responds, "Definitively, no." Both Palbaum and Jon Basalone, Vice CEO and president of Trader Joe's, insist that those friendly behaviors are merely a result of them telling crew members to be genuine, be nice, and most importantly, be themselves.
Shayne Jones, a San Francisco Trader Joe's employee, confirmed to SFGATE that what the CEO said was true — flirting is definitely not in the employee handbook. She hypothesized that people probably get that impression based on how outgoing all the employees are. “They tend to hire pretty effervescent people,” she said.
Those blustery PA systems just didn't feel right to us, so we came up with a simple system to communicate, à la our maritime (Trader's on the culinary seas) association. One bell lets our Crew know when to open another register. Two bells mean there are additional questions that need to be answered at the checkout.
