Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is a free-to-play online action RPG set in the long-running Phantasy Star sci-fi universe, and is finally releasing on PS4 in just a few hours' time, on 30th August, and you don't even need a PlayStation Plus subscription to log in.

New Genesis is a massively updated version of Phantasy Star Online 2, so much so that it might as well be a sequel. The title has been playable on Xbox and PC in the West for a while now, and now PlayStation players can get in on the action as well. You can check out an older trailer below for an idea of what kind of gameplay is on offer.

What do you think of Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis? Are you a fan of the franchise? Team up and save the universe in the comments section below.

Sucks that there's no native PS5 version but I'm willing to give it a shot. I've been disliking how Black desert online has been doing things for a while now so I'm looking to switch to something else.

I'm going to assume that this will run on my PS5? I still have my PS4 hooked up to an alternate TV, but I haven't really turned it on in months since I got my PS5. I'd rather play there (on my PS5) than have to boot up my older PS4 to give this a shot. I could try it out on my Xbox, I suppose, but I'm really enjoying how the PS5 feels when I'm playing on it. (Though I'm still waiting on Genshin Impact on my Switch, darn it all!)

Like every other F2P JRPG of the era it starts out promising enough but soon collapses under the weight of its own mechanics forgetting that the best thing about the Dreamcast original was its simplicity

FFXIV at least gradually introduces Game mechanics as to not overwhelm the player; this does not do that.

@Northern_munkey Ah the great internet buzzword. This one might be bad in many ways. But I bet someone like you can't tell me why.

Only took like 10 years, but it finally got here. Sadly the interest waned, but i will take a look.

Is it doable solo? Also the world looks quite empty. I will have to do a bit more research before I give it a try.

@RedRiot193 probably not and if i did you would probably argue the toss with me anyway so lets just say you won whatever you are trying to start..

@Slippship it's sad to see such a age old title pushed down to something like this 😀😀

Anybody have an idea on what time this is supposed to launch in NA? I don't know when the PS store updates over here, and I'm quite ready to give this a go! I've tried many F2P games over the years, and though yes...they can be riddled with microtransactions...they can also be a lot of fun when given a chance (and have the will to ignore spending and you enjoy a good grind).

@RedRiot193 Thanks much! Appreciate it. Guess I still have another couple of hours to wait then. I wonder what the file size will be like, and what I'll need to unload from my PS5 to download it. lol

@Highlar oof well about that. On pc it's about 102gb. That might be with all the updates. I'm not sure if that includes the og pso2. So good luck sending stuff to the guillotine lol.

I love Phantasy Star (duh). The original series is a fond childhood for me and Phantasy Star Online has been truly a game changer and led me to meet a bunch of people I still actively hang around with. Count me in for a little bit of PSO2, even if my time to spare is not really the same I could indulge in the good old days, it will be fun!

@Bentleyma Ooohhh... Just checked the Twitter like you said. Looks like there was some kind of PSO2 news thing TODAY, and the release of the game on PS is TOMORROW. Talk about confusing. Thanks for the heads up!

I made friends with someone because we bonded over waiting for PSO2 coming westwards. Insane to think that all those years later it's finally coming to PS
