SEGA's popular online action RPG Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is finally here. The game has been an Xbox console exclusive for the last two years or so, but it's now available to download — for free — on PS4, and PS5 via backwards compatibility.

Trying to explain what New Genesis actually is can take some effort, but we'll try and make this quick. Basically, New Genesis is a huge overhaul of the long running Phantasy Star Online 2. You can still play the original Phantasy Star Online 2 through New Genesis, so it's kind of like having two games in one. However, you'll need to download Phantasy Star Online 2 separately as an add-on to New Genesis. Both should be easy enough to find on the PlayStation Store.

New Genesis weighs in at 47GB on PS5 and PS4, and again, it's free-to-play. The title mostly makes its money through in-game purchases like cosmetic items, as well as some player convenience upgrades. But from what we've heard and read, the game's completely playable without spending a penny.

About Robert Ramsey

Massive F2P Action RPG Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Is Out Now on PS5, PS4 (3)

Robert (or Rob if you're lazy) has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, he's played 'em all — a little too much, some might say.

Can it be played completely solo? And does it have an actual campaign or is it just missions and raids?

Maybe ill look into it though I don't have the time for an MMO.

I'll eventually get around to trying this out, but my backlog--seems to get bigger every day despite the fact that I play and finish a lot of titles.

Phantasy Star IV is one of my all time favorite games, so I'm interested to get back into the Phantasy Star universe. Somehow I feel like this won't live up to my expectations though.

To be honest, this game looks like it's pretty big, so probably won't get around to it any time soon. Too many other games to play.

Playing the original PSO split screen with my brothers is one of my favourite memories growing up. I’m looking forward to playing this online with them. I’ve played the game for about 3 hours on my own and while I do miss the simplicity of the first game, I’ve really liked what I’ve played so far. I’m playing through the original PSO2 first, then I’ll move onto New Genesis.

Not trying to stir stuff up, but I don't want to hear about Sony having long timed exclusives from Xbox fans. Games like this and Cuphead comes to mind when I see long timed exclusives. Both companies do it. Good for PS for those that's interested.

I think I'm going to give this game a shot but I'm going to turn cross play off. I hate feeling like I'm way behind other people immediately upon starting a new game.

@Royalblues You sound like you play this frequently, I've never played any Phantasy Star. Is this game worth the time? Any advice to newcomers?

Or just link some video you think would be helpful if you don't wanna type a ton, thanks bro

I have alot of fond memories playing an older Phantasy Star game offline on my PS2, so will definitely check this game out.

@Royalblues Thanks for the link, the classes look like a lot of fun to play. I'd like to ask though, how grindy is this game? I know it's an MMO, but will I have to devote my life to it?

Can I enjoy it without spending money? Are there a lot of microtransactions/P2W elements?

Gave New Genesis a go. Sure looks and runs better then OG PSO2, but its just as dull and grindy. Unfortunately not very fun and honestly not very friendly. So much stuff that barely gets explained and things that don't get explained at all. Honestly expected with New Genesis they would do better, but it just feels like PSO2 with new paint.
