Understanding a futures price quote takes some practice before you can look quickly to get the information you need. There are a lot of different contracts. A tricky thing to get used to is the ticker symbol coding. Since contracts expire, ticker symbols contain contract symbols and the month and year of expiry.

The Exchange symbol for the futures contract is DX, followed by the month and year code.
For example assume we are talking about the futures contract for oil which is denoted as CL. The definition of the oil contract size is for 1000 barrels . Thus since the "Tick" is 0.01 the tick value is equal to the contract size multiplied by minimum tick, in our oil contract example 0.01*1000 =$10.
To name a specific contract in a financial futures market, the month code will follow the contract code, and in turn be followed by the year. For example, CLZ3 is the December 2023 NYMEX crude oil contract.
Month | Month Code |
---|---|
January | F |
February | G |
March | H |
April | J |
Typically, this is the contract closest to expiring, also known as the front-month contract. These contracts can be easily identified by looking at the symbol for a given asset. To find the correct symbol, you start with the product symbol. Next, you add the Contract Month Code.
Indicators like Volume Profile HD, Supertrend, RSI, and Bollinger Bands provide deep market insights, crucial for navigating the swift currents of futures markets. Whether it's identifying market trends, assessing volatility, or making quick, informed decisions, these tools are invaluable for any futures trader.
Prices - CME gold futures prices (Barchart.com symbol GC) raced higher in Q1 of 2022 and posted an all-time nearest-futures high of $2,072 per ounce in March.

If the symbol has three letters, the stock likely trades on the NYSE. A four-letter symbol indicates the stock likely trades on the Nasdaq. Some Nasdaq stocks have five letters, which usually means the stock is foreign.
The price of a futures contract is the spot price of an underlying asset, adjusted for interest, time, and paid out dividends. The variance between the spot price and futures price forms the 'basis of spread. ' The spread is the maximum at the beginning of the series but converges towards the settlement date.
Contract size
A futures contract has a standardized size that does not change, but it can be different for each product. For example, one contract of crude oil (/CL) represents 1,000 barrels. And one contract of gold futures (/GC) represents 100 troy ounces.
Futures charts are used by traders in the futures and options (F&O) market to analyze the price movement of a particular futures contract over a specific period of time.
There are many types of futures, in both the financial and commodity segments. Some of the types of financial futures include stock, index, currency and interest futures. There are also futures for various commodities, like agricultural products, gold, oil, cotton, oilseed, and so on.
An investor looking to purchase a commodity ETF only needs a brokerage to purchase the security. In much the same way as the investor would purchase a share of Apple, they only need to find the ticker symbol for the commodity ETF, place a purchase order, and receive the security once the purchase is complete.
While futures can pose unique risks for investors, there are several benefits to futures over trading straight stocks. These advantages include greater leverage, lower trading costs, and longer trading hours.
Keep in mind that contract codes can vary across platforms.

What is 6B in futures?
Futures specification Ticker: 6B Instrument Name: British Pound (GBP/USD) Category: Currencies Contract Unit: 62,500 British pounds Price Quotation: 1 GBP in U.S. dollars and cents Tick Size: 0.0001 (6.25$ per tick)
Futures markets are open virtually 24 hours a day, six days a week; however, each product has its own unique trading hours. Next, each contract specifies the tick size. Tick size is the minimum price increment a particular contract can fluctuate. Tick sizes and values vary from contract to contract.
What Is First Notice Day? A first notice day (FND) is the deadline date after which an investor who has purchased a futures contract may be required to take physical delivery of the contract's underlying commodity. The first notice day can vary by contract and will also depend on exchange rules.
To close an open position, you can take the opposite position in the same futures contract you are currently holding in your account. For example, to close an open long position in the March 2018 Crude Oil contract, you would place an order to sell the same number of contracts in the March 2018 Crude Oil contract.
Currency Futures: These contracts provide exposure to changes in the exchange rates and interest rates of different national currencies. Financial Futures: Contracts that trade in the future value of a security or index. For example, there are futures for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes.
